Vespulure is a liquid food-based attractant for trapping wasps and hornets, including the invasive Asian hornet in Ireland. Best used from July to September, it helps reduce nuisance and stings when wasps seek carbohydrate-rich foods at the end of their life cycle.

Description

Vespulure is a carbohydrate-based liquid attractant designed for trapping wasps and hornets, including the invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), which has recently been detected in Ireland. While this product has not undergone rigorous testing against the Asian hornet specifically, research and field use indicate that it is equally effective against them as it is with the more common wasp species in Ireland, such as the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) and the German wasp (Vespula germanica).

We recommend using Vespulure between July and September, once wasps have completed their vital role as pollinators and begin seeking carbohydrate-rich foods in preparation for the end of their life cycle. During this period, wasps and hornets become more likely to scavenge in public areas, increasing the risk of nuisance and stings.

For use with Mini Vespu trap or The McPhil Liquibator. Each trap can hold 100ml–300 ml of Vespulure, providing active attraction for 2–4 weeks depending on temperature and local populations. Traps should be hung at a height of 1.5–3 metres around the perimeter of the area to be protected, ideally away from seating and food. Positioning traps near hedgerows, woodland edges, or refuse bins can increase their effectiveness, as these are common foraging routes for wasps and hornets.

Vespulure is safe and easy to use, offering a targeted way to reduce wasp and hornet numbers in sensitive areas such as gardens, outdoor dining spaces, and public venues.
